The important work of Home Start in North Dorset

The important work of Home Start in North Dorset

The five years between birth and school are vital for a child’s development. What goes on inside a family strongly determines the opportunities and life chances children have. A nurturing, loving, stable family and home environment strongly determines a child’s future. Children whose parents are struggling to cope can miss out on the love, routine and support that are vital for their development and future well-being.

Home-Start North Dorset is an independent registered charity that supports struggling families with at least one child under five living in the North Dorset area. An organisation of passionate, committed people, who are ready to reach out and touch the lives of others.

We recruit and train volunteers who offer informal, confidential advice, help and friendship to the families we support. Volunteers are trained to give both practical and emotional support to a family and visit the family for 2 to 3 hours each week in their home. Their support is tailored to meet the needs of both the parents and children, who may have problems such as dysfunctional behaviours, post-natal depression, poor physical health and difficulty accessing support services or managing the home.

We all know how difficult parenting can be. Home-Start helps families to deal with whatever life throws at them.Parents and volunteers often develop a deeply trusting relationship that leads to powerful positive change within the family. Parents learn how to cope with the stresses and strains of life better and gain the skills and inner strength they need to nurture their children and become better parents. Their confidence grows steadily and they’re able to start building better lives for their families and giving their children the best possible start in life.

Home-Start's involvement in a family prevents small problems from becoming big ones. Early intervention is cost-effective and turns lives around, giving young children the chance of a better start in life. There are no other services in North Dorset that can reach out to and support the families we do. In the past year, we have helped 60 families and 142 children in an area of scattered communities and small towns with poor transport infrastructure.

How can you help?

Home-Start North Dorset is managed by a board of unpaid trustees and is responsible for raising all its own funds, enabling us to provide our service at no cost to families. If you’d like to help us make a real difference and turn lives around, you can become a volunteer, fundraise, make a donation or become a trustee.
